Breathing Into the Chaos

Yoga was developed to prepare the body and mind for meditation, and what I have learned while practicing on the mat is how to relax and ease the mind and body while in challenging positions. The power of the breath becomes miraculous while practicing yoga. Whether your body is shaking to hold a challenging pose or tense because of a deep stretch, yoga teaches us to use our breath to relax the mind and ease the tension in our body. If done correctly, we experience the mental strength to hold our pose, and even more impressive is the expansive stretch we gain by breathing into the tension and allowing the fascia in our muscles to relax. 

 

This breathing practice becomes a powerful technique off the mat when confronted with difficult circumstances. When we face difficulties, our minds can get the better of us, which causes stress to mobilize in our bodies. Utilizing the same breathing learned on the mat, we can calm our minds and bodies off the mat regardless of what life throws at us. 

 

Summarizing this lesson into a single simplistic thought would be, “Breathing into the chaos.” This results in a transformation from chaos to balance and stillness. Which is what yoga is all about for our bodies and our minds. Whenever life challenges me, and I sense my mind wanting to become frantic or my body tense, I remember the mat and breathe.

The most valuable lesson yoga has taught me is how to embrace stillness in moments of chaos. I remember one class where I was wobbling in tree pose, my mind racing with everything I needed to do that day. Anchor Yourself in the Present

The most significant thing I’ve learned through yoga is the power of being in the moment. Yoga allows you to anchor yourself into the present via breath, movement, and awareness. Strength and Vulnerability Coexist

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned through my yoga practice is that strength and vulnerability can coexist. I’ll never forget a few days after we lost our pup—our child—I stepped onto my mat, unsure if I could even make it through the session. Recognize and Release Tension

I think the most valuable lesson I’ve taken from yoga is learning to recognize and release tension I didn’t even know I was holding. On the mat, I’ve often found myself gripping my jaw or tightening my shoulders without realizing it. Importance of Prana

The most important thing I learned when going through my yoga teacher training was the importance of prana.

 

In yoga, prana is defined as “breath,” or “life force.” Pranayama is the fourth limb of yoga, and usually comes after or with the asana practice (the typical yoga class you’d take is considered asana).

Controlling the flow of air does wonders for the nervous system and can help calm the mind. For me, this has led to a more robust meditation and breathwork practice and has inspired me to experiment with different techniques and the sensations that come with it. This has helped me approach life more intentionally and level-headedly, and I have noticed a huge difference from it.

 

I’d encourage everyone (who is able) to try breathwork, as it can help the body function more effectively and also lead to a better state of mind, health, and heart.

Practice Self-Compassion

The most valuable lesson yoga has taught me is self-compassion and how to give myself grace. I was so incredibly hard on myself no matter whether it was work, fitness, or friends and family. I had to stop and ask, “Would I treat a friend or loved one so harshly?” The power of mindfulness through yoga made me realize that I needed to be a better friend to myself, which has made me a better person to those around me.

Learn to Let Go

Most important thing I learned from yoga is how to let go. Most of the time, I was fretting about trying to control everything, especially what other people did or how things turned out. And I guess being able to be okay with the things I could not change helped me find a lot of peace through yoga. It made me stop worrying and just focus on the things that I could change, which made my work and personal life more upbeat.

Stay in Alignment

As a yoga teacher and student, the most important lesson I’ve learned is alignment. On the mat, that means trying to stay in alignment during each posture and flow, and only going as far as I can—not forcing anything. 

 

And, being grateful for the opportunity to align my mind, body and spirit during every class I take. And, work to help others do the same, as a teacher.

 

Off the mat, that means I work to ensure that my character and values are in alignment with my words and actions.

 

As a spiritual person, that means I practice Christ consciousness—unconditional love and forgiveness—and hope others reciprocate that back to me.

 

Am I perfect? Not at all. 

 

But when I act out of alignment, I’m usually aware of it, and apologize and make amends.

In my professional life, this is reflected in my independent media endeavor, inter-TECH-ion, which focuses on diversity and social justice in tech. I’ve been told to pivot, based on the results of the 2024 election, but to do so would be out of alignment with my character and values. So, I will keep soldiering on, reporting on diversity and social justice, in the tech realm, no matter who our president is!

 

In this day and age, with the state of our national politics and social media, I feel like staying in alignment, on and off the mat, has never been more important. For our own mental health, for the collective health of the younger generations, and for the overall health of our country.
