I was in 7th grade at the time of the mishap. I sat in the very last seat of the school bus and chatted away to my friend across the isle. It happened so fast I did not even understand what struck us. The bus was stopped to drop off a child when all of a sudden we were all tossed forward in our seats from a huge effect from behind. I’d actually been sitting sideways in my seat at the time we were struck, and my head was tossed versus the seat in front of me, causing my neck to flex in means it never should.

At initially I felt no discomfort. I even whipped my head around to see the source of the effect. Peering out of the back window, I saw an automobile lodged beneath the side of the bus where I sat. A guy lay subconscious and bloodied in the driver’s seat. Was he alive? I hadn’t been so sure.

The ambulance came and I was required to the healthcare facility. I sustained a severe sprain to my neck and numerous hairline fractures. For the next month, I walked around with my neck tilted sideways. Whenever I moved my head I experienced agonizing pain.

As I matured, the neck pain never entirely went away. X-rays of my neck revealed calcium accumulation in the discs that’d actually been fractured. This caused numerous nerves in my neck to pinch. For several years I used everything from prescription discomfort medication and Advil to chiropractic back controls and massage therapy in an effort to relieve the pain. Although these things did help, they never ever totally eased the pain and weren’t lasting solutions.

Then, in 2008, I was fortunate enough to discover yoga. Under the support of my yoga instructor, I slowly worked my means with poses that involved moving the neck.
